  18. <p>     Despite the cigarette industry's growing disrepute,
  19. tobacco-company shares have generally been a smart investment
  20. in recent years. But now cigarette stocks face a challenge not
  21. unlike the campaign against companies doing business in South
  22. Africa. In a letter that came to light last week, Harvard
  23. University President Derek Bok disclosed that the school has
  24. divested its holdings in tobacco companies because their
  25. products "create a substantial and unjustified risk of harm to
  26. other human beings." At the City University of New York,
  27. trustees voted last week to dump its $3.5 million worth of
  28. tobacco stocks. The C.U.N.Y. divestiture was owing, in part,
  29. to the prompting of vice chairman Edith Everett, who serves on
  30. the board of a new lobbying group called the Tobacco Divestment
  31. Project, which aims to promote the sell-off.

  33. <p>     In another assault on tobacco, Health Secretary Louis
  34. Sullivan urged state governments last week to enact new laws
  35. to discourage the sale of cigarettes to minors. Among the
  36. provisions: a ban on cigarette vending machines. "Our children
  37. can easily buy cigarettes virtually anytime they want to," said
  38. the secretary in a statement. "Clearly, something has to
  39. change!"
